Hawaii teacher confesses to sexually abusing 13-year-old boy after being arrested for distributing child pornography

FBI agents have arrested a Filipino-American teacher in O’ahu, Hawaii, and charged him with distributing child pornography.

Alden Bunag, 33, received search warrants at his home and on his person. He was detained at Pearl City High School (PCHS), where he taught summer school on June 15.

According to court documents, Bunag distributed child porn via the Telegram instant messaging app from approximately November 2019 to at least October 2021.

“Child sexual abuse – a reprehensible crime – is especially exploitative when committed by a teacher against an underage victim of a student,” Hawaii District Attorney Clare E. Connors said in a statement. press release† “Recording such crimes and disseminating the images to others exacerbates and perpetuates victimization.”

the FBI discovered his illegal activities after a separate investigation into child pornography by a teacher at a private school in Philadelphia, according to reports.

The officers said they encountered numerous conversations between the Philadelphia teacher and Bunag on Telegram, where they discussed and traded child pornography with each other.

The two teachers reportedly exchanged more than 3,392 messages, many containing images and videos, from March 31, 2018 to October 1, 2021. The Philadelphia teacher was arrested last October.

During a voluntary interview with officers, Bunag admitted that he had had multiple sexual contact with a 13-year-old boy he described as a former student. According to authorities, he confessed that he knew that the victim was a minor at the time.

In Hawaii, the age of majority is 16 years old. Sexual activity with persons 15 years of age or younger can lead to prosecution for legal rape.

Bunag reportedly filmed sexual encounters with the boy during his school lunch break and shared at least one video with the Philadelphia teacher and others online. He also admitted to sharing child pornography with other underage victims.

A former student said: Bunag was “very friendly to all the kids, especially the male students”, while another described him as “a strange fellow”.

According to the Hawaii Department of EducationBunag has taught in several schools since 2012, including Leeward Oahu District as a substitute teacher from 2017 to 2022, Ilima Intermediate as a part-time temporary teacher from 2016 to 2017, and PCHS as a part-time temporary teacher from 2020 to 2022. PCHS stated that in the alleged incident, no of their students involved.

The Navy also said in a letter to parents on Friday that Bunag once worked part-time at the Hickam School Age Care and Teen Center.

Bunag’s preliminary hearing is set for June 27. He faces a minimum jail term of five years and a maximum of 20 years if convicted.
